It lives there as a ground dweller in rainforests, savannas, in coastal areas and along rivers. The golden teju can grow up to 1.4 metres long and has a black-brown, slightly bluish shimmer. Yellow spots on the back form several cross bands. White-yellow spots are found on the head, neck and legs. It has 17 to 29 preanal and femoral pores.
Golden teus feed on insects, spiders, eggs and small vertebrates. Occasionally they also eat fruit, herbs and flowers. They can climb and swim very well and dig living burrows in the substrate.
