Just west of the Basilica di San Marco in the Piazza San Marco is the entrance to Calli Merceria Orologio. This entrance is an archway, just below Torre dell' Orologio. If you get there early in the morning you can avoid the crowds and get the sun just hitting the calli in the morning.

If you are not staying near the Piazza San Marco, the best way around Venice is via a water taxi. There are berths just off of the Piazza.
