Travel Information

(WARNING, A very dangerous place to climb in the winter if you are not experienced with snow .) Getting to the peak in the winter is a lot of work and you need to be aware of avalanches. In the winter the primary cable car that can take you to the top of the peak and the guesthouse is closed so you will need to take an alternative route. Hiking the normal routes in the winter is next to impossible with all of the snow so you will need to take the Wasserauen gondola. It cost about 30 Euros but it can get you pretty close to the huts on the mountain and will save you about 3 hours of hiking in the warmer months. Where the Gondola drops you off it's about 1-1.5 hours of hiking in the snow to reach Schafler. Usually, the top of the Gondola has free snowshoes and I highly recommend using them for your assent to the top, it makes life much easier and you will need them in the deeper snow.

Just over an hour from Ebenalp, which can be reached by cable car (parking and train station in Wasserauen)
Alternatively hike from Säntis (3 hrs, for experienced hikers only, not for the faint-hearted!)
Like anywhere in the Alps wear decent gear, watch the weather and think of the risks…don‘t overestimate your skills.
