USA Trump Tower from Adams/Wabash, Chicago

  • Please log in or sign up for free to see the GPS coordinates & weather for this photo spot
The CTA train station Adams/Wabash at the Loop offers a great and unique view of the beautiful Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago. The best time for photography is probably the blue hour because you get this fantastic contrast between the blue sky and the orange/yellow colored buildings.
This spot is often used for time-lapse photography, as many trains pass by, and it was also used for a scene in the latest "The Batman" from 2022.

Photography Tips

Take care of trains passing this station, because while they do, the bridge over this station is shaking a little bit, which results in less sharp photos. Good timing to start a longer exposure is for example when the train already left the station or just until one is coming from the front. A tripod is a must-have for this spot if you want to shoot there during sunset or blue hour.

One additional tip: You can give the Trump Tower in the background way more depth if you use a technique called "dodge & burn" in your postwork process.

People, I think I replaced someone's photo here with my own, I don't know how it happened, but if something happened, I apologize

Manuel Becker 05.12.2022
Haha no worries dear Stepan, that's how the platform works. You can simply add photos to existing spots. At the top, you can swipe the images to see the other photos. If you click an image in the list view, the clicked image is preselected in the slider. You can even edit each spot similar to Wikipedia which ensures that you will always have the best and most accurate information in each spot instead of having hundreds of duplicates that you would need to search for all the information you need. If you have further questions I am happy to help.

Hi Manuel, is this area safe ?
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 19.06.2019
Hey Bernard, at least I felt safe, but it very much depends on the time I would say. Very late in the evening it's a train station that can only be reached by passengers, but there is definitely a chance that you are alone over there, so I would take care during the late hours I guess. Wish you safe travels and a great time in Chicago... would love to come back to this wonderful city as well...

Hi, I can't find a way to have metadatas on the website, is it possible to have them please ? Thank's ! And Really nice work dude !
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 04.01.2019
Hey Charly, currently we don't have the feature to show EXIF data, but it's planned for the future. My shot was taken at 17mm on a Canon 7D at f13, ISO100 with 17 sec exposure time. Hope that helps.

Thank's for your answer ! And yes, for this kind of website, it will be a nice feature to get exif. Do you have any ETA for this feature ? (weeks/month ?)
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 04.01.2019
Not yet, currently the app for Android and iOS is the highest priority and as soon as this one is live I guess the EXIF feature will be pretty high up on the todo list.

I plan on traveling light. Will a GorillaPod be okay at this spot for a long exposure?
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 02.09.2018
Oh, that might be tricky. I can't remember if the bridge was shaky or not, but you definitely can try. I mean if the bridge itself is shaking, you will have the same issue with any other tripod. The only advice I can give is, that you should do the exposure when the train is coming or has passed already, which is what you might want to have in your shot anyway, but this reduces the shake quite a lot. Good luck and have a great time in one of my favorite cities around the world!

Ok thanks! Any suggestions on spots outside of the popular ones?

In my opinion Chicago is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. I traveled to quite a lot of cities around the world, but Chicago was definitely the one that offered the most beautiful and unique views. Just have a look at the Chicago location and see what might fit to your style of photography.

Manuel, I have posted an exact same shot of Adams/Wabash, check it out. I did get hassled by the CTA staff and hence have to leave before I could take a few more. Thanks for your input on ligthroom/photoshop. Will keep that in mind. I would like to know your thoughts on my shot. Thanks Abhay

Great shot Manuel. I live in the city of Chicago. Will visit this spot tomorrow during the blue hour. Thanks for posting. 2 questions. 1. Do the CTA(train personnel) allow you to use tripods? They were crabby, when I used it at the Ashland bridge a month ago. 2. Dodge and burn? Is that a lightroom feature.
Manuel Becker Team
Manuel Becker 04.10.2015
Hey Abhay, thank you very much! To be honest I didn't even know that this couldn't be allowed to use a tripod there. But it makes sense, so I would suggest you to use it and be fast. Or be there during the summer when the blue hour is pretty late and there are less people around, which should make it even easier to use a tripod. I had used it at Ashland and here and didn't have any problems, but that could just have been luck I guess. Dodge & Burn is a technique and not a special feature of any application. You can also do it in Adobe Lightroom, but it's much easier and better in my opinion in pixeloriented apps like Photoshop. It's just important to understand that you can direct the eyes of the viewer by making somehing lighter or darkening things that shouldn't get so much intention. In this way you can also create more dimension like I did with the Trump Tower in the background where I lightened up the front that already got more light and darkened the right part, that was already a little bit darker. You can often change the lighting situation entirely, but I am just emphasizing the light/the shadows that were already there to get more depth. Hope that helps you. Otherwise feel free to ask again! Wish you good luck with your shot and we will add a feature very soon where you can easily add your photo to this existing spot if you want to.
