Albania Kanal i Ri i Murtemes, Albania

Sometimes the most memorable road trip photographs aren't taken at famous landmarks, but somewhere along the road between them. This drone shot captures a camper crossing a bridge over the Kanali i Ri i Murtemës in northwestern Albania, surrounded by wetlands, waterways and an unexpectedly lush landscape.

The canal lies within the low-lying Buna/Bojana delta, an area characterized by channels, wetlands and agricultural land. Maps of the region distinguish the Kanali i Ri i Murtemës from the nearby older Murtemës canal, showing how water has shaped this part of northern Albania.

This is a perfect example of why I like using a drone on road trips. From ground level, the bridge itself would probably feel relatively ordinary. From above, the winding waterway, dense vegetation, and mountain in the background suddenly turn it into a much more complete landscape.

The camper is essential for the composition. Keeping it relatively small in the frame provides scale and a clear focal point, while the bridge creates a strong horizontal line through the image. The canal then leads the eye deeper into the landscape.

The warm, low-angle light is another important element here. Shooting close to golden hour adds separation to the vegetation and makes an otherwise very green scene feel much more dimensional.

Kanali i Ri i Murtemës is located in Shkodër County in northwestern Albania, within the wider wetland landscape south of Shkodër and close to Baks i Ri. The area forms part of a landscape influenced by the lower Drin and Buna/Bojana river systems and the nearby Adriatic coast.

It is not necessarily a location I would plan an entire trip around. Instead, it is a great reminder to keep looking for compositions while driving through Albania. Bridges, rivers, mountain backdrops, and small rural roads can produce some of the most authentic road trip images—especially when traveling by camper.
