Albania Waterfall Grunas, Theth, Albania

Waterfall Grunas is one of the most beautiful natural spots around Theth and an easy addition to a stay in the valley. The narrow waterfall drops around 25–30 meters over a steep, moss-covered rock face into a remarkably clear mountain pool. Together with the nearby Grunas Canyon, it is a protected natural monument and one of the classic short hikes in the Albanian Alps.

The waterfall works particularly well in vertical compositions, emphasizing its height while still including the clear pool below. Several rocks around the water can serve as foreground elements.

Light can be quite challenging because the waterfall sits between steep rock walls. Direct sunlight creates very strong contrasts between the bright water and dark cliffs—as in this shot—while overcast weather or earlier/later light will give you a much softer exposure. A polarizing filter can also help reduce reflections on the pool and bring out the turquoise water.

If you want smoother movement in the waterfall, bring an ND filter and tripod for longer exposures, but I also like using faster shutter speeds here to retain some of the texture and power of the falling water.

The waterfall lies about 2–2.5 km from central Theth and is easy to reach on foot. From ahe Theth Church, follow the signed trail towards Grunas; expect roughly 45–60 minutes each way ,with around 140 mmetersof ascent. The trail is straightforward but becomes rocky in places, so proper shoes are recommended. Access to the waterfall itself is free.

It works perfectly as a 2–3 hour trip from Theth, or you can combine it with nearby Grunas Canyon. Late spring and early summer generally bring stronger water flow thanks to snowmelt, while summer offers easier hiking conditions—but also more visitors.
