Algeria Christian Basilica of Tipaza, Algeria
The Christian Basilica of Tipaza, dating to the 4th–5th centuries AD, was considered among the largest ecclesiastical buildings of Roman North Africa. Erected on a promontory with a commanding view of the sea, it followed the typical basilican plan with a central nave, side aisles, and an apse, while annexed chambers and numerous surrounding tombs indicated its dual function as a place of worship and burial. The scale of the structure, together with its prominent location, reflected both the consolidation of Christianity after the Constantinian era and the growing importance of Tipaza as a provincial centre in late antiquity. Its remains offered invaluable testimony to the fusion of Roman urban planning, early Christian liturgy, and regional funerary traditions.
