Algeria Miliana, Algeria
Miliana was set against the northern slopes of Mount Zaccar, overlooking the Chelif valley. Cobbled lanes were threaded through an Ottoman-era medina, where whitewashed houses and carved cedar doors were shaded by vine-draped courtyards. Cooler summer air was prized, and gardens and cherry orchards were nourished by springs and old canals. Craft traditions—copper-work, weaving and pottery—were long practised, and a gentle market rhythm was kept through the week. Landmarks such as the Sidi Ahmed Benyoucef Mosque and the Zaccar forest were favoured for quiet visits, while French-period terraces and remnants of old walls were left as traces of layered history. Wide views across the Tell Atlas were offered from the mountain road, and the town was used as a calm base for walks, picnics and unhurried weekends.
