Armenia Monastery of Goshavank

Goshavank is a magnificent monastic complex dating from the 12th and 13th centuries and one of the major religious and cultural centers of medieval Armenia. It was founded by the famous jurist, scholar, and fabulist Mkhitar Gosh, after whom it takes its name.

The architecture is a classic example of the Armenian style of the period, with dark-hued stones and detailed carvings (khachkars). The complex includes several churches, a library, a school, a bell tower, and some of the most elaborate and famous khachkars (cross-stones) in all of Armenia, created by the master Pavgos.

The atmosphere of the place is one of profound peace and spirituality, surrounded by the green forested hills of the Lesser Caucasus. It is significant not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical importance as a center of learning.

Photography Tips

Best Light:

Midday and early afternoon: Since the monastery is in a valley surrounded by mountains, the sun takes time to fully illuminate it and sets early. The middle of the day (approximately 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) is the best time for the light to fully bathe the facades and details.

The Blue Hour (A Must!): This is the most dramatic and magical time to photograph. Just after sunset, the sky takes on a deep blue hue, and the monastery's artificial lights are turned on, illuminating the dark stones with a warm, golden light. The contrast between the blue sky, the silhouetted mountains, and the illuminated monastery creates a composition of serene and spectacular beauty.

Cloudy days: Diffused light is excellent for highlighting the textures of the dark stone and avoiding harsh shadows, especially on the intricate khachkars.

Composition:

Wide-angle: Ideal for capturing the immensity of the complex and its integration with the landscape, especially during the blue hour.

Telephoto or macro lens: Essential for photographing the incredible details of the khachkars (especially the famous "lace" khachkar of Pavgos) and the carved ornaments on the walls and windows (vinzor).

Include the environment: Take photos from the nearby hills to show the monastery immersed in nature with the blue sky in the background.

Blue Hour Technique:

A tripod is essential. The exposure can last several seconds.

Shoot in RAW format for greater flexibility when editing and recovering details in the shadows and highlights.

Use a low ISO (100-400) to avoid noise.

Make multiple exposures (bracketing) and then blend them to achieve high dynamic range (natural HDR), balancing the sky and the highlights of the monastery.

Travel Information

You need a car to reach this spot; parking is possible. But you should be early because it is crowded later.
Other Recommendations:

For the Blue Hour: Bring extra warm clothing. Temperatures drop dramatically in the valley after sunset, even in summer. A headlamp or flashlight is very useful for gathering gear and walking safely on the monastery's uneven terrain.

Attire: As with all Armenian monasteries, respectful dress (shoulders and knees covered) is recommended. Comfortable shoes are essential.

Combining Your Visit: Gosh is very close to the spa town of Dilijan and Haghartsin Monastery. Plan a full-day excursion ending in Goshavank for sunset and the blue hour.

Food and Accommodation: Bring water and snacks. For an authentic experience, look for homestays or guesthouses in the village of Gosh or in Dilijan. This is ideal if you plan to stay until the blue hour, as you will have accommodations nearby.
