Armenia Orbelian’s Caravanserai, Armenia
Orbelian’s Caravanserai (also known as Caravasar of Orbelian) is a remarkable historical structure located in the village of Saghmosavank, in the Lori Province of Armenia. Built in the 13th century by the noble Orbelian family, it was part of the ancient network of caravanserais that served as shelters for merchants, pilgrims, and travelers along the Silk Road. Though now in ruins, its volcanic stone architecture, barrel vaults, and underground corridors retain a powerful and mystical aura.
Photography Tips
Best time to shoot: Midday, when sunlight directly hits the roof openings, creating intense beams and visible dust particles in the air. Also excellent at sunrise or sunset for warm tones.
Composition: Use a human figure as a focal point to add scale. Position the subject under the light beam for a “divine illumination” or dramatic silhouette effect.
Natural lighting: Lighting is highly contrasted. Use multiple exposures (HDR) or bracketing to capture both bright highlights and deep shadows.
Recommended gear: Wide-angle lens (16–35mm) to capture the full tunnel length. Tripod essential for long exposures. Polarizing filter to reduce glare on wet surfaces.
Background & texture: Focus on carved stone details, arches, cracks, and ancient columns. Dark walls pop with contrast if using controlled flash or artificial light (with permission).
