Hohenwerfen Fortress is a medieval hilltop castle in Werfen in the Salzburg region, situated between the Tennengebirge, Hagengebirge and Hochkönig mountains in the Salzach valley.
The construction of Hohenwerfen Fortress was initiated by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg (1060–1088) between 1075 and 1078.
In 1968, the Hollywood fortress served as the backdrop for the feature film Where Eagles Dare, starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.
