The Undine Fountain in Baden’s Kurpark is a magnificent structure created by the renowned Viennese sculptor Josef Valentin Kassin (1856–1931). Unveiled on July 1, 1903, the fountain served as a ceremonial symbol of the completion of the city’s water supply system. The sculptor drew inspiration from the fairy tale of Undine, a tragedy by the German Romantic writer Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. The story tells of the water nymph Undine, who falls madly in love with a mortal man. After their love is initially mutual, however, he spurns her, and she ultimately takes her revenge with a deadly kiss.
