Austria Hochkeil Trail, Mandlwände

The Hochkeil trail above the Arthurhaus offers some of the best close-up views of the dramatic Hochkönig massif and the jagged Mandlwände. As you gain elevation, the landscape opens up, and the combination of alpine meadows, forest, and huge limestone walls becomes increasingly impressive. The Arthurhaus itself sits at around 1,50meterses directly between Hochkeil and Hochkönig.

This viewpoint sits on the upper section of the Hochkeil trail, where the mountain walls dominate the horizon, and the meadows offer plenty of foreground options.

I photographed this scene shortly after sunrise, when the first warm light was beginning to hit the highest sections of the mountains and the vegetation in the foreground. The contrast between the illuminated pink flowers and grasses, the darker forest, and the rocky peaks creates several natural layers within the image.

A wide-angle lens works particularly well here. Get low and search for flowers or grasses close to the trail to create a strong foreground rather than simply photographing the mountain range from eye level. Sunrise is my preferred time because the low-angle light adds much more depth and texture to the landscape.

I started the hike at Berghotel Arthurhaus, which you can reach by road from Mühlbach am Hochkönig and which sits at about 1,500 meters. Numerous marked hiking routes start there, so you don't need an additional approach.

This particular photo was taken roughly 35–40 minutes uphill from the Arthurhaus parking area, on the way toward Hochkeil. For sunrise, you therefore need to start walking while it is still dark; a headlamp is essential. The advantage is that you don't necessarily have to reach the summit—the upper sections of the trail already provide excellent unobstructed views toward the Hochkönig and Mandlwände.
