Bolivia Laguna Colorada

Laguna Colorada in Bolivia is a shallow red lagoon located high in the Andes. Its striking red color comes from algae and minerals in the water. The lagoon is a key habitat for flamingos and is surrounded by salt flats and volcanic landscapes. It’s best visited during the dry season for clearer weather.

At Laguna Colorada, shoot during early morning or late afternoon to capture warm, soft light and vibrant colors. Use a telephoto lens to photograph flamingos from a distance without disturbing them. Include reflections of the colorful water and surrounding salt flats for dramatic effects. A tripod helps stabilize shots in low light, and a polarizing filter can reduce glare and enhance the red tones of the lagoon. Dress warmly and be prepared for cold, high-altitude conditions.

To reach Laguna Colorada, most travelers start from Uyuni, Bolivia, which is accessible by bus or plane from La Paz. From Uyuni, you can join a 3-day 4WD tour that includes stops at the Salar de Uyuni, Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, and other nearby attractions. Alternatively, you can hire a private 4×4 vehicle, but be prepared for challenging, unpaved roads and high-altitude driving. The journey takes approximately 6–7 hours, and it's advisable to travel during the dry season (May–October) for better road conditions and clearer skies.
