Bosnia and Herzegovina Lukomir
Lukomir is one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled on the edge of the Bjelašnica Mountains above the Rakitnica Canyon, the village features traditional stone houses with wooden shingle roofs and narrow cobblestone paths. Its remote location, stunning mountain views, and preserved architecture create an authentic and photogenic atmosphere.
Photography Tips
Early morning light and late afternoon offer warm, soft lighting that beautifully highlights the stone houses and surrounding mountains. Fog is common in the mornings, creating a mystical ambiance. Once the sun rises, light rays illuminate the village streets and rooftops, perfect for capturing atmospheric shots. The village’s mountainous location also makes it ideal for drone photography, giving dramatic aerial perspectives of rooftops, the canyon, and surrounding peaks. Be sure to respect locals—they are very warm and welcoming.
Travel Information
Lukomir is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Sarajevo, with the final section of the road being gravel and sometimes rough, especially after rain. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Visitors can explore the village on foot; facilities are very limited, so bring water and snacks. The village is generally accessible from late spring to early autumn, as snow can block roads in winter.
