The Mistaya River originates in Pristine Peyto Lake, located just a few miles down the road. From Peyto, the Mistaya river rushes over a flat bottom valley and plunges into the Mistaya Canyon. The canyon is just one of dozens of spectacular sites to see along Icefields Parkway in Alberta, Canada between Lake Louise and Jasper National Park.

Travel Information

The parking area for Mistaya Canyon is at the mile 71 marker on the Icefields Parkway in Alberta Canada. To reach Mistaya Canyon hike the trail from the carpark off Icefields Parkway for about 500m. Then just follow the Mistaya Canyon trail signs. You can’t get lost if you follow the sounds of the roaring river. The walk along the Mistaya Canyon trail takes 5 – 10 minutes at a brisk pace. At the bottom of the short hike downhill you will find a bridge. There are several paths leading down to the limestone rock shelf above the Mistaya River. Pick one.
