The Monument Samuel-De Champlain stands on Dufferin Terrace beside the Château Frontenac, marking the founder’s place in Québec City’s story. Unveiled in 1898, it was sculpted by Paul Chevré with architectural design by Paul-Alexandre Le Cardonnel. A bronze Champlain—hat in hand, charts at his side—crowns a pale limestone pedestal. Around the base, allegorical figures animate the narrative: a seated personification of Québec writing history, a winged Victory sounding a trumpet, and a child evoking navigation and discovery. The ensemble reads as both civic pride and maritime memory, perfectly placed between Upper Town’s promenade and sweeping views of the St. Lawrence.

For photography, frame the monument with the river or the Château Frontenac to anchor context; leading lines from the terrace railings guide the eye and help compose clean layers. Golden hour skims warm light across the bronze and stone; blue hour lets the pedestal glow against the deepening sky. After rain, use puddle reflections on the boardwalk for symmetry. A 24–35 mm equivalent captures statue and setting without distortion, while a short telephoto isolates the bronze profile and reliefs. Include passers-by for scale during the day; for minimalist night shots, wait for brief lulls and steady the camera for 1–5 s exposures.

Photography Tips

Shoot from Dufferin Terrace with the St. Lawrence or the Château Frontenac as context; use the terrace railings and boardwalk planks as leading lines. Go at golden hour for warm raking light on bronze and limestone; blue hour makes the statue pop against a deep sky. A 24–35 mm equivalent captures monument and setting without heavy distortion; a 50–85 mm isolates the bronze profile, allegorical figures, and reliefs. Try a low, slightly off-centre angle to emphasise height and gesture; circle to the river side for a strong silhouette. After rain, use puddle reflections for symmetry; in winter, fresh snow adds clean negative space. Manage crowds by shooting early or embracing them for scale. For night shots, use a tripod, low ISO, and 1–5 s exposures; bracket to hold highlight detail on the bronze and shadow detail in the pedestal. A circular polariser tames glare on wet stone and deepens skies; expose for the brightest metal highlights, then lift shadows in post.

Travel Information

The Monument Samuel-De Champlain stands on Dufferin Terrace, right beside the Château Frontenac in Upper Town.
