Cyprus Kolossi Castle
Kolossi Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located just outside Limassol, Cyprus. Originally built in the 13th century and later reconstructed by the Knights of St John, the castle is compact but steeped in history. Surrounded by vibrant gardens and remnants of the original complex, it offers a striking contrast between rugged stone and lush, colourful greenery – making it a great spot for both architectural and travel photography.
Photography Tips
The light can be quite harsh in the middle of the day, so go early morning or late afternoon if you want softer shadows and more flattering tones. Frame the castle through the garden for a vibrant pop of colour, or get up close to capture textures and details in the stonework. A polariser helps cut glare and boost sky and foliage colour. Inside, light is limited – crank up the ISO or shoot wide open to compensate.
Travel Information
Located around 15 minutes’ drive west of Limassol city centre, with easy parking right outside. Entry is inexpensive and usually quiet, making it easy to explore at your own pace. It’s not a huge site, but worth a stop if you’re touring the area or interested in Crusader history. Combine it with a visit to nearby Kourion or the wine villages for a full day out.
