Czech Republic Santon, Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows
Santon became an important stronghold in the northern part of the battlefield at the Battle of Austerlitz (Battle of Three Emperors) on December 2, 1805. The natural hill, then bare of bushes and trees, was artificially leveled and fortified with three lines of trenches by French engineers before the battle to create a firing position for 18 cannons protected by the 17th Light Infantry Regiment. A field kitchen was located on the western side of the hill.
In 1832, the Classicist Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was rebuilt on Santon. Today, its northwestern wall features memorial plaques dedicated to French generals Claparède and Valhubert and Russian general Bagration, created by Vladimír Drápal.
