Denmark Helnæs Lighthouse

Helnæs Lighthouse (Helnæs Fyr) stands very picturesque on the west coast of the small island of Helnæs, which is connected by a dam to the island of Funen.

Perched dramatically on a small cliff overlooking the Little Belt (Lillebælt), the white tower and its adjoining keeper’s house stand out beautifully against the rugged coastline and deep blue sea. The lighthouse was built in the early 20th century and continues to guide ships navigating the narrow waters between Funen and the Helnæs Peninsula. Helnæs Fyr is best photographed during late afternoon or golden hour, when the low sun illuminates the cliffs and lighthouse from the west, creating long shadows and rich color contrast. A drone is perfect for capturing the full scale of the coastline and emphasizing the lighthouse’s prominent position by the sea. For composition, try flying slightly offshore to frame the lighthouse against the land — this creates depth and highlights the curve of the shore. When the wind picks up, you’ll get dramatic waves breaking against the rocks, adding dynamic movement to the image. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the splashing water while keeping the structure sharp.

Helnæs Lighthouse is located at the southern tip of the Helnæs Peninsula, about 20 minutes by car from Assens, Funen. The road to the lighthouse winds through beautiful open landscapes and along the coast, making the journey itself a pleasure. There’s a small parking area near the lighthouse, and you can walk around the grounds freely. The site offers excellent views across the Little Belt and towards the Fynshoved coastline on clear days. While drone flights are permitted, always be mindful of the wind — it can be strong along this exposed headland.
