Denmark East coast cliffs on Aerø, Denmark
Along the east coast of Ærø, the landscape unfolds into dramatic cliffs rising above the calm Baltic Sea. It’s a wilder, quieter side of the island, where the coastline curves gently and the green fields end abruptly in steep, rugged drops. Standing here, with the wind in your face and the endless horizon stretching out in front of you, it feels like one of those places that truly belong to nature. The mix of soft evening light, open sea, and weathered cliffs gives this spot a raw and untouched atmosphere that’s hard to find elsewhere on the island.
Photography Tips
This spot is a gem for drone photography, especially in the late afternoon or golden hour, when the cliffs glow in warm tones against the deep blue of the sea. The best perspective is from above, capturing the natural lines of the coastline and the texture of the rocky edges meeting the waves. Be mindful of the protected coastal zones — you can easily capture great compositions while launching from the Sydstrand parking area near Kalvehave, staying over land rather than flying out across the sea. A lower altitude flight (under 40 meters) helps keep the cliffs in the frame with beautiful detail and depth. Early morning also works well, when the sea is calm and the air clear.
Travel Information
These cliffs can be accessed from Sydstrand near Kalvehave, where there’s a small parking lot close to the beach. From there, it’s just a short walk along the coast to find open viewpoints and safe takeoff spots for drone photography. The area is quiet, mostly visited by locals and walkers, making it easy to enjoy the stillness of the landscape. Ærø itself is reachable by ferry from Fynshav, Svendborg, or Faaborg, and exploring the island by car or bike allows you to discover countless hidden corners like this one. Bring a jacket — the wind here is almost a constant companion — but it’s part of what makes the place feel so alive and pure.
