Denmark Helnaes road, Denmark
The narrow road leading to Helnæs Island feels like something out of a dream — a thin ribbon of asphalt cutting straight through the sea, with waves crashing on one side and calm waters on the other. This small island off the coast of Funen is connected to the mainland by a causeway that offers one of Denmark’s most dramatic coastal drives. The view from above is breathtaking: the contrast between deep blue water, rugged coastline, and the winding road that seems to float between two worlds. Driving here, especially with the windows down and the sea breeze rushing in, is pure Scandinavian freedom.
Photography Tips
A drone is the perfect tool to capture the geometry and symmetry of this location. Fly from the mainland side to frame the causeway stretching into the horizon — it creates a natural leading line that draws the eye straight to the island. Keep your altitude moderate (around 40–60 meters) to maintain detail in both the road and the water textures. Early morning or late afternoon gives the most interesting light, adding depth and soft reflections on the water. If you’re lucky enough to have a car in frame (a red one works beautifully for contrast), it adds a sense of scale and adventure.
Travel Information
Helnæs is located on the southwestern coast of Funen, about a 40-minute drive from Faaborg. The causeway (Helnæsvej) is open year-round and offers parking areas along the way for short stops and photos. Be mindful of the wind, as it can be strong along this stretch — especially if you’re flying a drone. The island itself is small and peaceful, known for its rolling fields, cliffs, and lighthouses, making it ideal for a half-day trip or a quiet sunset drive.
