Abu Simbel is a historic site comprising two massive rock-cut temples built by Ramesses II. Construction of the temple complex started in  1264 BC and lasted for about 20 years.

The whole complex was moved to its current location when Lake Nasser was flooded for the Aswan hydro-electric dam. As you wander about, there are no obvious indications of this. But, if you walk further up the hill, behind the monument, you’ll find a small door. If you are able to enter, you’ll find a large cave with steel superstructure to hold the monument in place, like an elaborate film set. The relocation is an impressive engineering achievement in its own right.

Photography Tips

Outside is impressive - the indoor photography is very difficult.
