Faroe Islands Gjógv

This otherworldly landscape is the rugged basalt coastline located just northeast of the village of Gjógv, on the island of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands. The spot is famous for its dramatic, dark volcanic rock formations that create countless tide pools along the shore of the North Atlantic. During low tide, these pools reveal a vibrant, almost neon green algae that creates a stunning, high-contrast scene against the black rock. Towering, steep grassy cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop, completing a scene that feels raw, ancient, and untouched.

This is a landscape photographer's dream. To make the most of it:

Use a Wide-Angle Lens: To capture the vastness of the scene, from the foreground tide pools to the cliffs in the background, as you've done in your photo.

Bring a Circular Polarizer (CPL): This is essential. A CPL filter will cut the glare from the surface of the water and the wet rocks, dramatically deepening the colors and saturation of the green algae and allowing you to see the details beneath the surface of the pools.

Focus on Leading Lines: Use the cracks in the rocks and the bright green lines of algae to draw the viewer's eye through the image.

Tripod for Long Exposure: On an overcast day, a tripod will allow you to use a slower shutter speed to smooth out the motion of any small waves, creating a beautiful contrast between the static rocks and soft water.

Getting There: The location is accessible via a short and relatively easy hike from the village of Gjógv. From the village, follow the walking path that goes up and along the edge of the cliffs. You will need to carefully make your way down to the shoreline.

Best Time to Visit: Check the tide times! This spot is only fully revealed and safe to explore during low tide. Summer (June to August) offers the best chance for milder weather and long daylight hours.

What to Wear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with excellent grip are non-negotiable. The volcanic rock is sharp and becomes extremely slippery when wet. A windproof and waterproof jacket is essential, as the weather can change in an instant.
