Finland Northern lights reflection, Luosto-Pyhä National Park
The small ponds around Kantalampi are perfect for quiet walks, where you can enjoy nature almost entirely on your own. Their small size and surrounding trees help shelter the water from wind, often creating calm, mirror-like surfaces that can beautifully reflect the Northern Lights. The trees also frame the sky and reflections, making these ponds particularly atmospheric for Aurora photography.
Photography Tips
Use a wide-angle lens with a fast aperture (f/1.4–f/2.8) and start with an exposure of 3-8 seconds. If it's too bright go lower with your speed like I did. Adjusting your ISO according to the brightness of the aurora. A tripod is essential, and a short exposure helps preserve the movement and details of the lights. Include the jetty in your composition to add depth and scale.
Travel Information
The easiest way is to start at Kantalampi and follow the small paths around the ponds. The trails are short and easy to explore on foot, with several little detours leading closer to the water. Just wander around at your own pace and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
