Finland Isokurun gorge, Pyhä-Luosto-Nationalpark
Isokuru is Finland’s deepest gorge, reaching a depth of 220 metres, and is one of the most impressive natural formations in Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Surrounded by steep, rocky cliffs and ancient forests, the gorge features wooden walkways that lead through its dramatic landscape. The trail continues to Pyhänkasteenlampi pond and the beautiful Pyhänkasteenputous waterfall, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the area.
Photography Tips
Use the wooden walkways on the left side of your composition to create a natural leading line into the gorge. Their curves guide the viewer's eye through the image, adding depth and perspective while highlighting the impressive rock walls. A wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing the scale of the gorge and including both the walkways and the surrounding landscape.
Travel Information
The easiest way to reach Isokuru is from the Visitor Centre Naava in Pyhä, where the Karhunjuomalampi hiking trail begins. Follow the marked trail for approximately 2.5 km to reach the gorge, with wooden boardwalks leading down into it. The route is accessible on foot during summer, but visitors must stay on the marked trail, as the gorge is a protected area. There is no marked winter trail through the gorge due to avalanche danger.
