Finland Swamp North of Hossa Nationalpark
Endless forests, pristine lakes, and vast wetlands characterize the region around Hossa National Park and Kuusamo in northeastern Finland. The landscape is particularly fascinating for its numerous swamps and peatlands, which create beautiful natural patterns, especially impressive from above.
In autumn, these wetlands become a colorful mosaic of golden yellow, orange, and reddish-brown vegetation, contrasting beautifully with the dark green pine trees. Small patches of forest, isolated trees, and winding natural boundaries create almost abstract compositions that are perfect for aerial landscape photography.
What makes this region particularly interesting is that landscapes like this are incredibly common. You don't necessarily need to visit a specific viewpoint or famous photography location. Simply exploring the roads around Hossa and Kuusamo reveals countless similar wetlands, many of which offer fantastic opportunities for drone photography.

Photography Tips
A drone is definitely the best tool for capturing the unique patterns and colors of Finland's wetlands. For this image, I used the 7x telephoto camera on my DJI Mavic 3 Pro, which compressed the perspective and emphasized the contrast between the golden swamp vegetation and the darker forested areas.
Unlike a typical wide-angle drone shot, the telephoto perspective brings the landscape's elements closer together, creating a more abstract, almost painterly composition. Look for interesting shapes, diagonal lines, isolated groups of trees, and transitions between the open wetlands and dense forests.
Autumn is my favorite season for photographing these landscapes, especially in September, when the vegetation turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. Overcast conditions can work exceptionally well because the soft light brings out the natural colors without creating harsh shadows.
Experiment with different camera angles rather than always shooting straight down. A slightly angled perspective combined with the 7x zoom can create beautiful compression effects, while a top-down composition emphasizes the textures and natural patterns of the wetlands.

Travel Information
These wetlands occur throughout northeastern Finland, particularly around Hossa National Park, Kuusamo, and the roads connecting smaller villages and wilderness areas. The landscape mixes boreal forests, lakes, rivers, and extensive peatlands, making the region an excellent destination for photographers interested in remote nature.
No single designated photography spot fits this type of composition. Instead, I recommend exploring the region by car or campervan and looking for interesting wetlands along the way. Many of the most photogenic areas are visible from smaller roads, although the actual swamp landscapes may extend far beyond the roadside.
The best time to visit is generally from mid-September to early October, depending on the weather and the progression of the autumn colors. In northern Finland, peak foliage can arrive earlier, so it's worth checking the local ruska forecast before your trip.
For drone photography, always check the current Finnish airspace restrictions and any additional regulations that apply to protected areas. If you are flying near Hossa National Park, verify the park-specific rules beforehand. Also, avoid walking directly into sensitive wetlands, as the ground can be unstable and the vegetation easily damaged.
The biggest advantage of this region is its abundance of similar landscapes. With a little patience and a good eye for natural patterns, you can discover incredible aerial compositions almost anywhere between Hossa and Kuusamo.
