Finland Saimaa ringed seal
Lake Saimaa in southeastern Finland is home to one of the world's rarest seals, the Saimaa ringed seal. This endangered freshwater seal lives exclusively in the Lake Saimaa system and is one of Finland's most fascinating wildlife species.
On a guided wildlife excursion with Saimaa Holiday Oravi, you can explore the beautiful lake landscape and, with some luck, observe these incredible animals in their natural habitat. Seals occasionally rest on rocks along the shoreline, offering great opportunities for wildlife photography.

Photography Tips
A telephoto lens is essential for photographing Saimaa ringed seals, as the animals are shy and should never be approached too closely. For this particular shot, I used a long focal length to capture the seal resting on a rock while keeping a respectful distance.
A lens with at least 300–500mm is ideal, especially when photographing from a boat. Use a relatively fast shutter speed to compensate for boat movement, and enable continuous autofocus to capture unexpected movements.
Soft morning or evening light works particularly well, while overcast conditions help preserve details in the seal's distinctive patterned fur. Always follow your guide's instructions and avoid disturbing the animals.

Travel Information
Lake Saimaa is located in southeastern Finland and is the country's largest lake. The small village of Oravi, between Savonlinna and Varkaus and close to Linnansaari National Park, is one of the best starting points for wildlife excursions.
I joined a guided excursion with Saimaa Holiday Oravi, which offers boat trips through the beautiful lake landscape with opportunities to observe Saimaa ringed seals in their natural habitat. Sightings are never guaranteed, but experienced local guides know the animals' preferred habitats and can help maximize your chances.
Late spring and early summer are generally the best time for seal watching, though sightings are possible during other ice-free months. Book a guided excursion in advance, especially during the summer season.
Since the Saimaa ringed seal is highly endangered and sensitive to disturbance, always maintain a respectful distance, avoid approaching resting animals, and choose responsible wildlife tour operators.
