Finland Haponlahden canal, Finland
Haponlahden Canal is a beautiful, peaceful waterway in Finland's Lake Saimaa region, surrounded by calm waters, small islands, and dense forests. The area offers some wonderful opportunities for landscape photography, particularly if you're traveling through Finland by campervan.
This small peninsula beside the canal is especially photogenic, offering a secluded setting with water on several sides. During sunset, the warm evening light illuminates the surrounding trees and islands, while the calm lake creates beautiful reflections. It's a fantastic place to capture the freedom and peaceful atmosphere of a Finnish road trip.

Photography Tips
A drone is definitely the best way to capture this location and its beautiful surroundings. For this shot, I positioned my drone above the water, capturing the campervan on the small peninsula, the setting sun, and forested islands in the background.
Golden hour is particularly beautiful here, as the low sunlight creates long shadows and warm highlights on the trees. Including a campervan adds scale and a storytelling element.
Experiment with different altitudes and perspectives to emphasize the peninsula's shape. A slightly elevated angle works particularly well to include the surrounding islands and reflections on the water.

Travel Information
Haponlahden Canal is located in the Lake Saimaa region of southeastern Finland, north of Savonlinna. The area is easily accessible by car or campervan and makes a wonderful stop on a trip through Finland's Lakeland region.
The small waterfront area shown in this photograph offers a beautiful setting for a peaceful overnight stay in a campervan, with direct views across the lake. However, always check local parking signs and regulations before staying overnight, as Finland's Everyman's Right does not automatically permit motorhome camping on private land.
The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn, especially around sunset when warm evening light illuminates the surrounding landscape. September is especially attractive, with fewer visitors and the first autumn colors appearing in the forests.
If you're planning to stay overnight, arrive before sunset to explore the surroundings and find a suitable parking spot without disturbing the natural environment.
