Finland Jyrävä rapids, Oulanka Nationalpark
Jyrävä Rapids is one of the most impressive natural attractions in northeastern Finland's Oulanka National Park region. Located along the Kitkajoki River near the famous Little Bear's Trail (Pieni Karhunkierros), this powerful waterfall is surrounded by steep rocky banks and beautiful Finnish forests.
During autumn, the scenery becomes particularly spectacular as golden birch trees contrast with dark green conifers and the white, rushing water. The combination of powerful rapids, rising mist, and colorful forests makes Jyrävä a fantastic location for landscape and nature photography.

Photography Tips
For this shot, I chose a very low perspective near the river's surface, using the flowing water in the foreground to create depth and lead the viewer's eye toward the rapids.
A medium focal length works particularly well here, compressing the scene slightly while keeping the surrounding autumn forest in the composition. The mist rising from the waterfall adds another beautiful layer to the photograph.
Overcast conditions are ideal for photographing Jyrävä, as soft light preserves detail in the bright white water and darker forest. Experiment with faster shutter speeds to freeze the powerful rapids, or longer exposures to soften the water.

Travel Information
Jyrävä Rapids is located along the Kitkajoki River near Juuma, approximately 30 minutes by car from Ruka. The waterfall is a highlight of the popular 12-kilometer Pieni Karhunkierros hiking trail.
You can reach the rapids on foot from the Juuma area by following marked hiking trails through beautiful forests and along the river. The terrain includes rocky sections, stairs, and uneven paths, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
September is a beautiful time to visit, when the surrounding forests display vibrant autumn colors. Early mornings are often quieter, offering more opportunities to photograph the landscape without other visitors.
Important: The river is extremely powerful, and the rocks near the rapids can be slippery. Keep a safe distance from the water, and don't enter the river to recreate low-angle compositions—instead, use accessible, stable ground along the shoreline.
