Finland Reindeer ar Ruka ski hill
Ruka Ski Hill near Kuusamo in northeastern Finland is not only a popular winter sports destination but also a fantastic place for autumn wildlife photography. At this time of year, large groups of reindeer often roam freely across the ski slopes, grazing on grassy hillsides and resting near the surrounding forests.
Reindeer are accustomed to people, making Ruka a particularly accessible place to observe and photograph these beautiful animals. With autumn colors appearing across the landscape, it's a wonderful opportunity to see one of Lapland's most iconic animals.

Photography Tips
For this shot, I used a telephoto lens to capture a close-up portrait of a reindeer while staying at a comfortable distance. The longer focal length creates a beautifully blurred background, allowing the animal to stand out against the soft green tones of the surrounding forest.
Try shooting from a low angle at the animal's eye level for a more intimate composition. Focus on the eyes and wait for natural moments, such as the reindeer looking around or grazing.
Early mornings and late afternoons offer particularly beautiful light, but overcast conditions also work well for wildlife portraits. A 200–500mm telephoto lens is ideal for capturing details without disturbing the animals.

Travel Information
Ruka Ski Hill is located in the popular resort town of Ruka, approximately 25 kilometers north of Kuusamo. The area is easily accessible by car, with several parking areas around the ski resort.
In autumn, you can often spot groups of reindeer around the lower slopes, especially near the campground and surrounding grassy areas. You don't need to hike far to find them, though sightings aren't guaranteed.
September is a particularly beautiful time to visit, combining reindeer photography with the colorful Finnish ruska season.
Although reindeer may seem comfortable around people, they are still animals that deserve respect. Keep a safe distance, avoid approaching or feeding them, and never position yourself between a mother and her calf. During the autumn rut, males can also become more unpredictable.
