Finland Myllykoski Mill across the rapids.
Myllykoski Mill is one of the most picturesque locations along the famous Little Bear's Trail (Pieni Karhunkierros) near Oulanka National Park in northeastern Finland. The traditional wooden mill sits directly beside the powerful Myllykoski Rapids, surrounded by dense forests and beautiful rocky riverbanks.
While most photographers capture the mill from the nearby suspension bridge or the opposite riverbank, this perspective, much closer to the water, offers a completely different composition. The rushing rapids create a dramatic foreground, while the historic wooden building and colorful autumn forest provide a beautiful backdrop. It's actually my favorite perspective of this popular location!

Photography Tips
For this shot, I went down to the river below the suspension bridge to photograph the mill from a much lower angle. This perspective is less commonly photographed and allows you to include the powerful rapids across the entire foreground.
A wide-angle lens works particularly well here, emphasizing the water's movement while keeping the mill and surrounding autumn forest in the composition.
Overcast conditions are ideal, as soft light balances the bright white rapids with the darker wooden building. Experiment with different shutter speeds to either freeze the moving water or create a slightly softer appearance.
Be extremely careful: The rocks near the river are incredibly slippery, and the current is very strong. Use only stable, safely accessible ground; never enter the water, and don't risk getting closer just for a photograph.

Travel Information
Myllykoski Mill is located near Juuma in the Kuusamo region of northeastern Finland, along the popular 12-kilometer Pieni Karhunkierros hiking trail.
The mill can be reached from the Juuma parking area by following the marked hiking trail toward Myllykoski. The route passes through beautiful forests and includes wooden walkways, stairs, and suspension bridges. Even closer is the parking at Oulanka Base Camp (for a fee)
Most visitors photograph the mill from the bridge or designated viewpoints. The lower perspective shown here requires extra caution because the terrain near the river is uneven, rocky, and potentially dangerous. If conditions are wet or slippery, stick to the established viewpoints instead.
September is a particularly beautiful time to visit, when the surrounding birch trees turn golden yellow and create a wonderful contrast with the dark wooden mill and white rapids.
