Finland Kämärinkoski, Varkaus
Kämärinkoski is a beautiful riverside location in Varkaus, southeastern Finland, known for its flowing rapids, large moss-covered rocks, and peaceful natural surroundings. One of its most photogenic features is a small, traditional red wooden cabin standing right beside the water, surrounded by trees.
During autumn, the bright red building contrasts beautifully with the golden birch leaves, dark river water, and green moss. Although it sits near the center of Varkaus, the scenery feels surprisingly peaceful and makes a wonderful subject for landscape photography.

Photography Tips
For this particular shot, I used a vertical composition, photographing the red cabin from across the river and framing it with colorful autumn leaves in the foreground.
Large, moss-covered rocks create natural leading lines toward the cabin, while overhanging branches add depth and help frame the scene. A medium focal length works particularly well to keep the building prominent without losing the surrounding landscape.
Overcast conditions are ideal here, as soft light brings out the cabin's colors, autumn foliage, and moss without creating harsh shadows. Try experimenting with different shutter speeds to capture either the texture or movement of the flowing water.

Travel Information
Kämärinkoski is located in Varkaus, in Finland's beautiful Lake Saimaa region. The rapids are part of the Kämäri area, which offers walking paths, riverside scenery, and several nature-photography opportunities near the town center.
You can photograph the red cabin from the opposite riverbank, where the surrounding rocks and trees provide interesting foreground elements. Take some time to explore the accessible paths and try different compositions.
September and early October are particularly beautiful, when the surrounding trees turn yellow and orange. The area is also worth visiting during spring and summer when the vegetation is lush and green.
Be careful when approaching the water, as the rocks can be extremely slippery and the current is strong. Stay on safe, accessible ground rather than climbing onto wet rocks for a photograph.
