France Place Stanislas

A beautiful square to visit in Nancy France.

Place Stanislas in Nancy links the medieval old town with the eighteenth-century new town and serves as the city’s ceremonial living room. Between 1751 and 1755, Stanisław Leszczyński commissions Emmanuel Héré to shape a perfectly rectangular square with crisp axial views. Today, along with Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance, it sits on the UNESCO World Heritage List and anchors Nancy’s identity.

The architecture forms a unified classical stage set. The Hôtel de Ville, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and the Opéra national de Lorraine frame the space, while the Arc Héré acts as a triumphal hinge to the next square. Jean Lamour’s wrought-iron gates—rich with gilding—sparkle at the corners and entrances, and Barthélemy Guibal’s fountains animate the edges. Regular façades, Corinthian pilasters, steady cornice lines, and finely tuned proportions keep the composition disciplined yet festive.

Take it at night as it is at its best lit up. There will also be less people. The lightposts on the square create some interesting light patterns. Use a tripod and blend several shots if you want to get rid of the people on the square, or use a long exposure
