France Dune du Pilat

Dune du Pilat is situated on France’s Atlantic coast, just south of Arcachon Bay in Gironde, where a pale ridge is seen dividing sea and forest. Heights of around 100–110 metres are recorded, nearly three kilometres are spanned along its length, and about 500 metres are measured across, while ridges and slip faces are continually reshaped as sand is driven inland and the pine fringe is slowly overtaken.

Its formation is sustained by quartz-rich sand that is brought shoreward by waves and then lifted inland by prevailing westerlies. Grains are piled on a gentle windward flank and are released down a steeper leeward slope; during storms, fresh sediment is delivered, layers are stacked, and buried soils or tree remains are at times exposed—evidence that migration and avalanching are ongoing through the Holocene record.

For photography, the most rewarding light is found at sunrise and sunset, when low angles are cast that carve ripples into relief and warm the sand. Minimalist frames are achieved with untouched ripple fields or the knife-edge crest used as a leading line; telephotos are employed for abstract textures, wide-angles for sweeping vistas, long exposures for blue hour, and strict adherence is kept to local rules, especially for drones.
