The Pont-Canal of Digoin sits where Burgundy meets Auvergne–Rhône-Alpes, just west of the town centre of Digoin. It carries the Canal latéral à la Loire over the wide Loire River, so you watch boats glide above a natural river that still runs free below. You reach it easily on foot from Digoin’s quays or by bike along the EuroVelo 6 route.

You meet a long, elegant aqueduct that reads like infrastructure with manners. Stone piers rise from the river, a metal trough holds the waterway, and simple balustrades frame the scene. The lines stay clean and rhythmic: pier, span, pier, span—an engineer’s heartbeat rendered in masonry and steel. Locks and canal furniture nearby add charm and context, so the bridge doesn’t sit alone; it lives inside a working fluvial landscape.

For photography, the bridge rewards patience and movement. Shoot from the riverbank at low angle to emphasise the repeating arches. Walk onto the aqueduct for vanishing-point compositions with boats as moving subjects. Early morning mist on the Loire softens the backdrop, while golden hour lights the stone and reflects in the canal—double highlights for the price of one. Long exposures from midstream viewpoints turn the Loire silky and the canal mirror-smooth, and night shots pick up warm town lights with starbursts on the balustrade lamps. Bring a polariser to tame glare on water; bring curiosity to catch barges sliding over a river like a quiet magic trick.

Photography Tips

Scout both levels: from the Loire’s banks for repeating arches, then on the aqueduct for bold leading lines. Chase light—sunrise mist for mood, golden hour for warm stone, blue hour for lamp starbursts. Pack 24–35 mm for context and 70–100 mm to compress piers. Use a polariser to tame glare and a 3–6 stop ND for silky water; tripod, low ISO, and f/8–f/11 keep it crisp. Compose cleanly—symmetry on the deck, rule of thirds from the bank, level balustrades. Add life with a passing barge (1/15–1/60 s pan) or long exposures (10–30 s) for a ghosted glide.

Travel Information

Reach the Pont-Canal of Digoin by train with a TER to Digoin station, then walk or bike 15–20 minutes to the aqueduct signed “Pont-Canal sur la Loire” on Rue des Perruts. Arrive by bike along EuroVelo 6; the towpath feeds straight onto the deck. Come by car by navigating to Rue des Perruts, 71160 Digoin, where you find parking near the canal works and the first lock. Cruise by boat on the Canal latéral à la Loire and glide directly across the aqueduct. Time your arrival for golden hour and walk the span—lines, reflections, and soft light all come together.
