Pinols is a small, high-country commune in Haute-Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It sits around 1,000 metres on the fringe of the Margeride and above the wild Allier valley, about 8–9 km from Langeac and roughly 37 km from Le Puy-en-Velay. Expect open pastures, dark pine woods and long views to the Cantal hills when the clouds behave.

The name reaches back to medieval mentions (Pinhols, Pignoulx, Pinholz) and likely comes from the Occitan “pinhol,” meaning “young pine.” The settlement pattern remains dispersed hamlets and farmsteads, with the church and a handful of stone houses anchoring the main village.

Photography potential
• Village character: warm stone walls, slate and tile roofs, the church tower against rolling green. Early and late light rakes beautifully across façades.
• Big landscape: high viewpoints toward the Sancy and Cantal massifs; low angles along the Allier give you river curves, granite bluffs and the railway arches.
• Seasons: frost and morning mist in the valleys; hay bales and thunderclouds in late summer; copper forests in October.

Photography Tips

• Golden hour from lanes above the village or near La Laisse hamlet for layered horizons; carry a 70–200 mm to compress the church against the hills.
• Along the GR470 near Langeac–Prades, use a polariser to cut glare on the river and deepen sky; bring an ND filter (3–6 stops) for silky water at midday.
• Watch for valley fog—arrive before sunrise and climb 100–200 m to get above it.
• In autumn, under pine and beech, spot-meter for highlights and let the shadows fall to keep mood.
• Night: low light pollution makes easy Milky Way work in summer; a tripod and a 20–24 mm at f/1.8–2.8, 15–20 s, ISO 3200 is a good starting recipe.
• Practical: many scenes are on private farmland—stay on marked tracks and close gates.

Travel Information

• By train + taxi: TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes trains serve Langeac station (43300). From Langeac it’s a short taxi ride to Pinols (≈8–10 km).
Gares et Connexions

• By car from the north (A75): exit around Saint-Flour and continue on departmental roads across the Margeride to Pinols in about 40–45 minutes, depending on route and weather.

• By car from Le Puy-en-Velay: head west via the Allier valley through Langeac; Pinols sits in the hills above. Allow about an hour for the scenic drive.
