France Monastère royal de Brou
The Royal Monastery of Brou is a religious complex located in Bourg-en-Bresse.
Its monastic buildings house the Municipal Museum of Bourg-en-Bresse.
The Royal Monastery of Brou is a masterpiece of early 16th-century Brabant Gothic architecture. It consists of a complex of monastic buildings constructed between 1506 and 1512, and the Church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Tolentin in Brou, built from 1513 to 1532 according to plans by Louis van Bodeghem—his only known work outside the former Netherlands.
This rare architectural complex was built at great expense by the very powerful Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy, governor of the Burgundian Netherlands, godmother, and aunt of Charles V.
She had the complex built in memory of her husband Philibert the Fair and to fulfill the vow made by her mother-in-law Marguerite of Bourbon to house there the tombs of her mother, her own, and her husband’s
