France Saint-Palais sur Mer - Carrelets

In various parts of the world, generally from the shore, in marine, fresh or brackish waters, and sometimes from a fishing platform (a pontoon dedicated to this practice) or a boat, horizontal sections of nets (round or square) are also used, which are hauled in after being set on the seabed (with or without bait). These are known as ‘balances’ or ‘carrelets’ (square-shaped nets).
