To get to Île d'Aix, first travel to the mainland port of Fouras, which is about 30 km south of La Rochelle. From Fouras, regular passenger ferries cross to Île d'Aix in around 20 minutes. Since cars are generally not allowed on the island, visitors usually explore on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn carriage. The ferry ride also offers beautiful views of Fort Boyard, making the journey part of the experience.
