Georgia Mtirala Nationalpark Lake, Georgia
Hidden beneath the dense subtropical forest of Mtirala National Park, this small natural lake and river pool feels almost completely enclosed by vegetation. Clear mountain water, moss-covered trees, and the surrounding forest create a scene that feels much more like a rainforest than what many travelers might expect to find in Georgia. It is a beautiful place to slow down and enjoy the park's atmosphere beyond its better-known waterfalls. If you bring a swimsuit or shorts, you can even take a dip!
Photography Tips
Use the dense forest to your advantage. Moss-covered trunks, branches, and fallen trees make excellent foreground elements and can naturally frame the water and your subject. Including a person helps communicate the scale of the vegetation and adds an adventurous element to the scene. Expose carefully for the bright openings in the canopy, as the contrast between sunlight and the dark forest can be significant. Overcast conditions provide softer light, while occasional sunlight breaking through the trees can create beautiful highlights.
Travel Information
The pool lies along the hiking trails inside Mtirala National Park and can be combined with the park’s waterfalls and other forest sites. Reaching it involves walking through humid subtropical forest, where trails can be muddy and slippery after rainfall. Good footwear is highly recommended, as is rain protection—the exceptionally wet climate is exactly what makes Mtirala so lush. Allow more time than the hiking distance alone suggests, as there are plenty of smaller photo opportunities throughout the forest.
