If you intent to take a picture of Neuschwanstein Castle your way will lead you up to the "Marienbridge". (Pass the castle and keep on walking to the Marienbridge!) On your way you will also find a nice spot to take pictures from Hohenschwangau Castle.
After sunset you will find this spot more or less for your own.

In winter, if there is a lot of snow, a door that will lead you to the Marienbridge will be, due to safety reasons, closed. Thus, you neither can take pictures from Marienbridge.
(There is no entrance fee but rather a good walk uphill on the road to the castle)
