Germany Schloss Johannisburg, Aschaffenburg
Schloss Johannisburg in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Germany. Built between 1605 and 1614 under Archbishop Johann Schweikard von Kronberg, it served as the second residence of the prince-bishops of Mainz. The striking red sandstone structure overlooks the River Main and houses the Schlossmuseum, which features artworks, historical furnishings, and an extensive collection of cork architectural models. Despite being heavily damaged during World War II, the castle was meticulously reconstructed and remains a prominent landmark of the city.
Photography Tips
For great photos of Schloss Johannisburg, shoot from Ebert Bridge for reflections, ideally at sunset or during blue hour for warm or moody light. Use a tripod and long exposure for smooth water and sharp details. Early morning or late afternoon gives soft light, and symmetrical compositions highlight the castle’s architecture.
Travel Information
You can reach the Ebert Bridge viewpoint by walking from Aschaffenburg’s city center toward the Main river; it’s only a few minutes from the castle and offers a clear, direct view of Schloss Johannisburg.
