The pilgrimage church Maria Gern in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria is a well-known location for photography. Photographing this spot from the street or from any public area is allowed, the very typical view from the hill is a private area though and therefore now prohibited by the owner - probably because too many photographers were standing up there every day. Please respect this or request a special permit.

Photography Tips

You will love it at sunrise, but also evening and in the at night. You need a tripod and a variety of lenses.

So happy taken this Shot 1978.. No f…ing tiktok, Instagram and so on. Digitally fotography & Social Media is a curse now, sorry.. All the Spots I Visited now - the Same bullsit: Sankt Magdalena Villnöss, Pragser wildsee, Karersee, and so on.. no Drone Zone etc.. Warning Signs in EN, CN, and other Language -with no trespassing and Electro Fences, How i wish back the Time before 2003..too much people

i'm confused, is this road private, or just the area off the road? and the owners think a drone invades their privacy, even it's kept above the road and its camera facing the mountain and the church?

Sorry for my late reply because I didn't see your comment but still want to be sure others know about this as well: So from what I know the road is definitely public but the higher view from the hill is private and this is where most of the people stood to take the photo with the typical view. I am not sure though if it's allowed to fly a drone just above the street to get a similar view. I think this depends on the local rules and is less about the private ground.

I tried the exact location marked on the map here and eventually got shouted at by some angry German saying that this is private property and I should get out immediately. Just beware :)

Yes, I've seen your description. However, the location you marked on the map IS on the private property, so I'm just making it clear for everybody, because as a non-german I didn't find the signs at location to be very clear. Unfortunately, it also happens to be one of the best viewpoints because the composition doesn't work all that well once you move back to the road for instance.

Indeed, it is private property. And indeed it is the best viewpoint. I tried several times now, and never made it to the top of that hill next to the road.

It might be easier to delete the pictures, taken from private ground. You can't recommend the spot on a page like this. The other photographers will get into trouble...
