The sable antelope reaches a shoulder height of up to 1.4 metres and can weigh up to 250 kilograms. The horns grow up to 1.64 metres long. It is therefore somewhat smaller and lighter than the horse antelope, but has significantly longer horns that are slightly curved backwards. The horns are strongly curled and are carried by both sexes.
The sable antelope is conspicuous by the pitch-black coat of the males, which is sharply defined in white on the belly. Females and young males are red to dark brown.
The distribution area stretches from Kenya to the steppes of East Africa (e.g. Tanzania) to southern Africa. Sable antelopes usually live in a dry, open landscape interspersed with trees. Permanent water and medium or tall grasses should be present. Their main food is grass, but they also eat leaves occasionally.
