Germany Schwerin Castle
Schwerin Castle was set on an island in Lake Schwerin and was long used as the residence of the dukes and later grand dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Its site was first fortified by Slavic settlers in the 10th century, and successive medieval and early-modern structures were raised. In the mid-19th century (1840s–1850s), the present appearance was created under court architect Georg Adolf Demmler, with input from Friedrich August Stüler and others. A picturesque Neo-Renaissance synthesis was adopted, and French châteaux—most notably Chambord—were consciously referenced.
A five-winged plan was established around an inner courtyard. Facades were articulated with towers, oriels, and high roofs, and a gilded dome was crowned by a Victory figure. Interiors were fitted out in historicising styles to project dynastic prestige. The surrounding palace gardens were redesigned under the influence of Peter Joseph Lenné; terraces, parterres, and lakeside vistas were composed to frame the architecture. In the 20th century the complex was preserved and adapted; today, it has been used by the state parliament and partly presented as a museum.

Photography Tips
A tripod and filters are highly recommended for this spot, allowing you to get longer exposures during the day for softer water and sky, making sure that the attention is on the castle instead of the many details around it.
For photography, strong vantage points were offered by the Schlossbrücke and the lakeside promenades, where axial views and water reflections were obtained. The courtyard allowed symmetrical compositions, while the garden terraces permitted layered depth with balustrades and statuary placed in the foreground. Golden hour light was found to emphasise the warm stone and sculptural roofline; blue hour exposures benefited from façade illumination mirrored in the water. In spring and autumn, floral beds and foliage were used to anchor colour contrast, whereas winter fog and occasional ice yielded atmospheric minimalism. A polarising filter was found helpful over the lake; longer focal lengths were preferred for isolating the dome, pinnacles, and ornament without crowd intrusion. Tripods were typically tolerated outdoors, but interior use was often restricted and had been subject to museum policy.
