Spring limestone formations are often found at the source outlets of lime-rich groundwaters. In rare cases, a special form develops, the "stony gully". With a length of almost 40 m and a height of 5 m, the "growing rock" of Usterling ("Der Wachsende Felsen von Usterling") is the largest stony gully in Germany.
