Germany The Würzburg Residence
The Würzburg Residence (Würzburger Residenz) is a masterpiece of late Baroque architecture and one of Europe’s most magnificent palaces. Built between 1720 and 1744 by the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, it was designed by architect Balthasar Neumann and adorned by artists like Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, who painted the breathtaking ceiling fresco in the main staircase — the world’s largest fresco on plaster. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, it stands in the heart of Würzburg, Franconia (Bavaria, Germany), symbolizing 18th-century power, artistry, and elegance.
Photography Tips
Best time to shoot: Sunrise or sunset for golden light on the façade and fewer crowds.
Recommended angles: Front façade from Hofgartenstraße for perfect symmetry; rear garden (Hofgarten) for lush, scenic compositions.
Interior shots: Tripods and flash are not allowed inside, but you can capture architectural details using higher ISO and wide apertures. Don’t miss the Mirror Hall and Imperial Staircase.
Seasons: Spring and autumn offer vibrant garden colors; winter snow adds a magical fairytale atmosphere.
