Germany Königsplatz Propyläen, Munich
The Propyläen at Munich's Königsplatz serve as a monumental city gate, designed by architect Leo von Klenze and completed in 1862. Inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis, this Doric-style structure was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to symbolize the bond between Bavaria and the newly established Kingdom of Greece, ruled by his son Otto. The gate's reliefs and sculptures commemorate the Greek War of Independence and honor Greek freedom fighters. Notably, the Propyläen mark the western end of Königsplatz, which was conceived as a Neoclassical ensemble reminiscent of ancient Athens .
