Germany The Marktkirche in Wiesbaden
The Marktkirche in Wiesbaden is a striking neo-Gothic Protestant church located at Schlossplatz. Built between 1853 and 1862 by Carl Boos, it replaced the medieval Mauritiuskirche, which burned down in 1850. Often called the "Cathedral of Nassau," it was the largest brick building in the Duchy of Nassau at the time. The church features a red-brick façade, five towers including an 88-meter-high west tower, a starry-vaulted interior, stained glass windows depicting scenes from Christ’s life, and a historic Walcker organ. Its 49-bell carillon, installed in 1986, is the largest in Hesse. The Marktkirche remains a central landmark and venue for worship and cultural events in Wiesbaden.
